1. General

Plainpage provides free tools and general information. We work hard to make the tools reliable, but we can’t guarantee every result. Please read this with our Terms of Use.

2. Always check your output

Plainpage never changes the file you choose. It saves a new copy. Before you rely on or share that copy, open it and check it, and keep your original. This matters most for:

  • Redaction: Plainpage removes what you mark, but it can only redact what you mark. Automatic finding of names, emails and numbers works on text it can read, so it can miss text in images, unusual fonts or scans that haven’t been through OCR. Check every page.
  • OCR: recognised text can contain mistakes, especially with poor scans, handwriting or unusual layouts.
  • Conversions: PDF to Word and PDF to text give you the text, not the exact layout, pictures or tables.
  • Compression: stronger levels reduce image quality, and the Scans level turns pages into images.
  • Whiteout: covers content without removing it from the file. It isn’t redaction.

3. Signatures and legal documents

Sign PDF adds a visible image of your signature. It isn’t a certificate-based digital signature. Electronic signatures are accepted for many everyday documents, but some documents legally require a particular kind of signature. Plainpage doesn’t give legal advice. If you’re unsure whether a signature is valid for your purpose, ask the person who needs the document or a legal adviser.

4. Passwords and protection

Protect PDF uses AES-256 encryption, the strongest the PDF format supports. A PDF’s security still depends on the strength of your password, and restrictions on printing and copying are respected by most PDF apps, but not all. Lost passwords can’t be recovered by us or anyone else.

5. Your device

Because the tools run on your own device, speed and the largest file you can process depend on your device’s memory and processor, and on your browser. Very large files may be slow or fail on older devices.

6. Offline copies

Plainpage can work offline using copies saved in your browser. Those copies refresh automatically when you’re next online, so until then you may be using an older version.

7. Other websites and open source

Links to other websites are provided for convenience. We aren’t responsible for their content. Plainpage includes open-source components provided by their authors under their own licences, without warranty, as listed on our open-source licences page.

8. Liability

To the fullest extent allowed by law, Nova Site isn’t liable for any loss or damage arising from the use of, or reliance on, Plainpage or its output. The full terms are in sections 9 and 10 of our Terms of Use.
